Set in the summer of 1972, the film follows 11-year-old Vada Sultenfuss, who lives with her widowed funeral-director father and struggles with fear of mortality, first romance, and friendship with Thomas J. Sennett. When her father hires Shelly DeVoto and begins to fall for her, Vada’s already complicated coming-of-age takes a more painful turn.
