In 1947, banker Andy Dufresne is sentenced to life in Shawshank State Penitentiary for the murders of his wife and her lover, despite maintaining his innocence. Over the next two decades, he befriends contraband smuggler Ellis “Red” Redding and becomes involved in a money-laundering operation run by warden Samuel Norton, while his integrity and hope earn the admiration of other inmates.
